Interdisciplinary Studies Class Ten

Of course there’s a quiz today, being Tuesday, and of course I read the stuff that was due for today.  Sadly, that’s not what the quiz is on.  *Sigh.*  Oh, well, I’ll muddle through it.  I have read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, too bad that was over a decade ago.

The Amish

Everyone has seen a construction site, with the fenced off area, the I-beams, and concrete mixers, and trash, and tools, and mess that comes along with it.  We rely on the fact that everything will work out and the building project will be completed correctly.  We do not necessarily understand how all the parts work, but we know that the building will stand and work correctly.

How does this relate to the Amish?  Think of any of the portrayals of the Amish you have seen in movies, specifically the Barn Raising scene in “Witness.”  The Amish follow a set of rules called the “Ordnung” which basically states that they should not accept the use of a technology if it takes away from their sense of religion or community.

I’d Like To Register An APAS Note

Yeah, really stretching for titles these days.  I’ll have to review some old shows on YouTube or NetFlix this weekend to come up with some new ones.

So this is the last day of Part 1 of our APAS class, and, that said, we’ll be starting Part 2 “Tensions” next week.  Really not sure how all these parts are working together, especially since I haven’t heard or seen anything really consistent as far as topics yet…

…save the “sign” of course.  Really have to get the rest of the books, and read them in order to understand what’s going on from here on out.  Good thing pay day is coming up.  Too bad I owe a ton on rent.  Well, I’ll figure it out.  Maybe I can sell one of the 30 or so domain names I own.  Anyone interested in owning krechr.com?  How about geek-girls.com or geek-planet.com?  I have no clue what to do with them myself.

Google Chrome, The Quick Review

So, Google Chrome went live a little less than an hour ago, and I’ve been playing around with it in that time.  I’ve been trying to do what any typical web user might do to see if how it functions, how quickly things load, etc.  I have to say, that so far, I’m rather impressed, but not yet convinced that it’s a better browser than what is already available.

First let me discuss the good.  I have to admit that Chrome seems to be running a lot faster than any of the other browsers I’ve used (Firefox. IE, Flock, Safari, Opera, etc.)  I have only been using it for about 30 min so far, so I’m not sure if it will slow down as it stays open or not.  They claim that it won’t, but we’ll see.  Pages seem to load faster, video runs really well, AJAX scripts are phenomenally fast, Javascript handling equally so.  Thus far the only slow loading pages I’ve come across are the ones I know have a server or database slowness error.  So that’s the good.

Now for the bad.  I have to say that thee User Interface isn’t as intuitive as I’d like.  One area that I’ve already come across an issue is in the Settings Otions area.

And On To Asian And Pacific American Studies

For anyone who doesn’t know me (and I think that’s most of the world) I’m an Interdisciplinary Studies student at Arizona State University.  To understand what Interdisciplinary Studies is (sort of,) please read the last post.

Anyway, one of my areas of study is Asian and Pacific American Studies.  I chose this because my education up through most of University always seemed a little too Euro-centric to me.  I’m not complaining, I know that European culture has the strongest influence, both historically and today, on American culture.  I just always felt that I was missing part of the story.  That’s why I chose what I did

(The other part of my major is a concentration in Business, and the goal of my major is to find the combination of these two areas.)

And now, onto the notes (assuming that we don’t just go over the syllabus and the books)  I really hope not, but we’ll see.

First note, this class is cross-listed in Communications and Womens Studies and is called:  Asian Pacific American Genders and Sexualities.

ROFLMAO!

We’ve all had a client that kept wanting you to change their site in some heinous way. Next time you get one of those “great suggestions” just send the idea-man here.

Guerilla Marketing Tactics: Self-Deprication

I was walking home from class the early last week, and came across another student passing out cards and announcing a free party. Most of the the crowd was either ignoring him or avoiding him as he hawked the get together.

Suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere he said, “My life sucks! I’m just trying to pay for school.” In that instant about fifteen people changed course and grabbed one of the fliers he was peddling while another student voiced, “Hey, guys, lets take a flier.”
