Well, here it is, Sunday again and frankly, I was a bit out of ideas. So, instead of the normal techie help links I’ve decided to post a list of places you can go online to stay connected to others on the web.
Social Sites have been springing up lately and most of them are basically pointless or are merely copies of other sites (e.g., BakeSpace, a MySpace clone for chefs.) So this list goes over the ones you should be on and why.
- MySpace: Inarguably the largest and most influential of the social web. MySpace may not be the most professional site, but they did innovate the personal profile. It’s also a good place to find people that you haven’t heard or seen in years. There’s a good chance they have a profile.
- Facebook: Starting life out as a place for University students, Facebook has grownby leaps and bounds lately. More professional than MySpace and with a higher education level, Facebook is another place where you can connect with people you’ve lost contact with. You can also be a pirate and fight ninjas!
- LinkedIn: Basically an online resumé LinkedIn allows to post your work experience and make contacts with other professionals. You can also ask questions of others, and request recommendations from co-workers and supervisors.
- Del.icio.us: If you’re anything like me, you have a ton of links stored in your bookmarks. Delicious allows you to store them online and pull them up from any computer anywhere. You can also connect with friends, and share links that you like with them.
- Twitter: This site allows you to update your current status, and message that info to friends, relatives, co-workers, people who “Follow” you, and basically anyone else on the internet. While there’s really no real point to Twitter, it does allow you to stay connected with people all over by connecting to your phone through SMS.
- Spock: This one isn’t so much a social site as it is a search engine for individuals. You can add RSS feeds, your websites, and profiles to it, once you’ve claimed your profile. Just be sure you pick the right one. (There are a lot of Mark Millers out there, and I almost grabbed the wrong guy. Oops.)
Well, those are the important ones in my opinion. Places you may want to go and check out. (See Cre8Buzz once it gets out of Beta testing…if ever) Again, I didn’t cover nearly everybody by any means, but it’s a big internet, so you have to draw the line somewhere.
